As all of you know, I have never been one to shy away from using a coupon or any method of saving money for that matter. We received a notice from TXU, our current electric provider, that our current contract is expired and in 40 days they will be increasing our rate. Originally we signed up for a reduced rate along with rebates and they were betting that we would just stay on the same plan after all the incentives burned off. Little did they know that they were dealing with someone whom saving money is my favorite game. I did some research and as it turns out after we switch we will be saving $30 - $40 per month on our electric bill.
Here's how it works. Texas has deregulated electricity, so all the electricty comes from the same power grid. All the lines are maintained by TXU so they will be fixed in the event of an outage at the same time regardless of whom your provider is. Effectively the only difference between all the companies is the customer service. The State of Texas even has a website that your can go to compare the different prices and plans for all the electric companies in your area.
Here's how you can figure out if you need to switch. Go to http://www.powertochoose.org/_content/_compare/compare.aspx enter your zip code and other plan preferences (i.e. fixed rate plan, variable rate plan, % use of renewable energy, etc.). Once you find one that you like call them and switch. It is seemless and you can save some cash!

One more thing...before you switch make sure you don't have a termination fee with your current provider.
I just love my husband!!! This week he also "negotiated" with an online company to get the new running shoes that I wanted for over $30 off, with free shipping, a free dri-fit tshirt for him and a free reusable shopping bag (which I love!). I don't know how he does it. I am glad he does though :)
Free stuff, impressive!
